Madrid, March 31, 2020 –
The Public Interest Oversight Board (PIOB) announced on March 31, 2020, Linda de Beer was appointed Chair of the PIOB.
Ms. de Beer is a chartered accountant (SA), holds a master’s degree in taxation and is a professor in practice at the University of Johannesburg. She is a chartered director (SA), and serves as an independent non-executive director on a number of South African listed company boards. In addition, she has a long professional history of being involved in the setting, monitoring and oversight of reporting standards, corporate governance principles and related regulation.
”I am honoured and delighted to be appointed to this position. The PIOB has and will continue to play a critical role in ensuring that the public interest is served in the setting of standards for auditors. Now, more than ever will the integrity of corporate reporting, and hence the credibility given to that by the statutory audit, be tested. Those are two important cornerstones to be protected and enhanced as we unite in serving the public interest and in rebuilding our economies, when we move forward out of this unprecedented pandemic.”
Ms. de Beer has been nominated by IOSCO and replaces Mr. Eddy Wymeersch who has chaired the PIOB since 2011.
Mr. Robert Buchanan also joined the PIOB on March 31, 2020, as PIOB member replacing Maria Helena Pettersson. Mr. Buchanan is a New Zealand-based lawyer and consultant with a background in public sector legal practice, public and not-for-profit sector governance roles, and nearly a decade of involvement in audit standard-setting.
